My name is Nikki Makino. I’m a pediatric speech-language pathologist passionate about helping children develop meaningful, confident communication. I graduated magna cum laude from Loma Linda University in 2016, and have worked across both clinical and private practice settings ever since. My approach is rooted in connection, curiosity, and lifelong learning—because I believe that true progress comes when children feel safe, understood, and connected. Connection always comes before compliance.
Early in my career, I worked with a child diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech—and I quickly realized I didn’t yet have the tools that child truly needed. That experience became a defining moment in my journey and led me to pursue specialized training in PROMPT and DTTC. Since then, I’ve continued to deepen my expertise in motor-based speech disorders, AAC, and supporting neurodivergent learners through an understanding of the brain-body connection.
When my daughter showed signs of a tongue thrust, I dove into the world of oral myofunctional therapy—not just to support her open-mouth posture and guide her toward healthy nasal breathing, but also to better serve other children with similar needs. That personal experience continues to shape the empathy and intention I bring to every family I work with.
I’m deeply committed to empowering caregivers as partners in the therapy process. One of the most important parts of my work is teaching parents how to support their child’s communication at home, in everyday moments. I integrate parent coaching and collaborative practice into sessions so that, over time, my role naturally fades—and families carry forward with confidence, clarity, and tools that last.
Outside of work, I’m a mom to two young girls and Miso, our dog, who inspire me every day. I love spending time outdoors with my family, traveling, and experiencing the world through my children’s eyes. I’m passionate about building a more supportive, inclusive community for all kids—and leaving behind a better world for mine and yours.

FAQs
Do you accept insurance?
I am currently out-of-network with insurance providers. However, I can provide a superbill for potential reimbursement, and I’m happy to guide you through that process. I strongly encourage you to contact your insurance and ask about potential coverage of “out-of-network” speech-language therapy providers.
Are you taking new clients?
Availability varies throughout the year. Please contact me to inquire about current openings or to join the waitlist.
Where do sessions take place?
Services are currently offered in-home around the South Bay Area (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, El Segundo), community settings (e.g., local parks, libraries), and virtually. Please reach out to confirm what options are available for your location.
How long are sessions?
I offer sessions for 30-minutes or 60-minutes, depending on the child’s specific needs. Additional service time may be needed for parent-coaching or AAC consult with the child’s school team and/or other therapists.
